A Totemic Encounter
I had to nip out for some shopping today so I thought I would take a quick diversion into town for another leisurely stroll along the riverside - well that and the fact that it always seems amenable to capturing an image for blip and today turned out to be no exception.
This rather odd edifice is actually a bronze sculpture that was created in 1998 to celebrate Maidstone's festival of flowers. As with other artworks in the town it then appears to have been rather unceremoniously cast aside (it originally stood in a prominent position in the High Street) to a nondescript site next to the river - it sits between an underpass, a rather unprepossessing stretch of the river and an architecturally questionable Travelodge hotel.
I tried to find out more about it online but it's just described as "Totem Pole". It's an idiosyncratic (some might argue bizarre) mixture of sculpture boasting carvings of what appear to be unrelated figures with rather incongruous planters, currently housing an array of dead plants, attached at various heights and the aforementioned totem pole. I couldn't do the whole thing justice but I hope my viewpoint of just part of it reflects the oddness this peculiar structure! The very least you can say about it is that it's certainly not boring, it has a character all of its own and I think that should be celebrated.
