Levada link

We finally found a circular walk - 2 Levadas, one up and then steps down to join the return. These have a story of controversy- the oldest one was ‘owned’ by the local community who took their share of water for the land when needed. Then, the big bad government, under Sanlazar, built a new one and also wanted to take over the old one - charging the locals for the water they would take. This culminated in a local revolution- one person lost their life, others injured - eventually some arrangement was reached. Water - precious for life.
Both Levadas are quite stunning.
