Guarding the library

It's a Literature Week this week so I' set myself a challenge of blipping book related pictures all week.

These are two out of a row of sculptures above the entrance to the National Library of Scotland. Uncle Google says that they are allegorical figures depicting arts and sciences, I'm not sure what is the woman on the left supposed to represent... I find them all rather ominous, with these empty eyes and detailed clothes they look like tombstone figures.
