The United States Of America - I won't leave my wooden wife for you, sugar (1968)
While I was in Chippenham I bought the new copy of The Wire (which included The Wire Tapper 61 CD) and noticed an article about Dorothy Moskowitz who has a new album coming out as part of The United States Of Alchemy, 55 years after the release of The United States Of America, by the same, of whom she was a member. It was an album that I owned at the time and now have digitally. The best known track by the band is I won't leave my wooden wife for you, sugar because it was included on the legendary sampler LP The Rock Machine Turns You On and introduced its audience to a new world of electronic instruments, treated vocals, loops, poetry and marching bands. The lyric was adapted from Adrian Henri's Song Of Affluence or I Wouldn't Leave My 8-Roomed House For You (uncredited, of course). The band also included her then partner Joseph Byrd with whom she had previously worked on an album of South Indian raga music, recorded in December 1963 and released in 1967 featuring the vocals of Gayathri Rajapur. Dorothy Moskowitz played tamboura on the recording.
