tempus fugit

"A single tree in the external corner"

This shrub probably a Buddleia, is all that's thriving at the old Ship and Anchor which called last orders for the final time in 2013, just around when we were setting up  the surplus food cafe. The two guys who managed the pub offered us all their cooking equipment and unused food stocks which we gratefully accepted.  (Their tubs of chopped garlic lasted for ages.)

Since then the Ship and Anchor has stood empty becoming more and more decrepit. Nevertheless in 2017 when plans for a new one-way traffic system for  the town were being sketched out the boundary of the conservation area was shifted to include this building which  has been feature of the traditional townscape for over 140 years. There were hopes that it might be revived by someone with loadsa money to spend.

So the new route was moved a short way  and Transition Cafe bit the dust instead. NOW five years the site has been sold for a housing association who propose to demolish what's left of the old pub and build a block of twelve one-bedroom flats.

"There will be a U-shaped, private courtyard to the rear which will be used as a communal garden for the residents of the flats as well as narrow strips of landscaping to the frontages and shrubs and a single tree in the external corner."

Local people are not happy. The town needs more housing but this development is not aimed at families, it provides no parking and is out of kilter with the rest of the street.
Now we wait for the result of the planning application later this month.
