The Southern Ocean

Chapter 1-Page 6

We had a wonderful catch up this afternoon with Mark, Nicky, Angus and Lottie.  We had met them way back in August when we were up north at Lombadina which is on the Dampier Peninsular just north of Broome.  They told us tonight that when they started travelling from NSW they had a new vehicle.  that vehicle has now clocked up 40,000 km’s.  That means they’ve seen a huge amount of Australia.  They even managed to see Wombat Hollow when they made a flying visit to see family a few weeks ago.

After we parted ways late this afternoon and not before we had all tucked into some great fish and chips right next to the Blackwood River, Mauzee and I decided to head out to the Leeuwin Lighthouse in search of a particular rock formation that we had heard about from one of the very knowledgeable locals.  We’re pretty sure this is “The Trench”.  It’s a channel that sits just below the Leeuwin Lighthouse.  Apparently you can snorkel in the trench and be absolutely engulfed by the sea life that frequent it.  It’s not a place to swim furiously but to float serenely and enjoy the experience.  We arrived just before the sun was setting and it was quite beautiful.
I took this image looking due south and the next stop if you started travelling in this direction would be Antarctica!!
