Negative tunnel vision

I've previously photographed this old avenue when everything is in leaf, and mostly the ground's in shadow with the sun breaking through where there's a gap in the trees towards the far end. That wouldn't have worked today - strong sun, but no leaves on the trees so the ground is illuminated most of the way along. 

So, I thought I'd try inverting the image to see what happened. After a bit of experimentation, this is what I ended up with.
