3717 - Enneus Heerma bridge
The gateway to IJburg
Four reclaimed islands form the first phase of the IJburg district in the easternmost part of Amsterdam. The Enneus Heerma Bridge connects Zeeburgereiland with Steigereiland, which is then connected to the artificial islands of Haveneiland, Rieteilanden, and Centrumeiland. The bridge is therefore an important connecting link between IJburg and the rest of Amsterdam. With a length of 230 meters, it is one of the longest bridges in Amsterdam. The bridge was designed by British architect Nicholas Grimshaw. The design won the National Steel Award in 2002 in the category Infrastructure and Other Steel Constructions. The bridge is named after the Amsterdam CDA politician Enneüs Heerma (1944-1999)
