Spe'uth

Spe'uth is the Hul'qumi'num' word for Bear. Hul'qumi'num', the language spoken by the Cowichan Tribes, is a dialect of Halkomelem, the language of several Indigenous nations of the BC coast. There are few fluent speakers, and programs for revitalization of the language are so important. I worked in Cowichan Tribes territory for many years and know a few words.
This spe'uth is painted on the wall outside the local school district offices. "Indigenous Education in School District No. 64 (Gulf Islands) is dedicated to supporting the success of Indigenous learners in our school district, as well as promoting a deep awareness of Indigenous culture and history among all students." (from the excellent Indigenous Education page on the school district website). There are wonderful photos on some of the links.
A different bear in my other journal.
