Beautiful day in paradise
Sunday 12 February
We enjoyed a wonderful first day in Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian islands. The first three nights we are treating ourselves to a stay at one of the resorts in the south of the island, in Wailea. The resort overlooks the sea, and has several pools. There is a beach adjacent, but as in all Maui beaches, they are public. We enjoyed breakfast sitting outside, overlooking one of the pools and the sea. Between the hotel and the sea there is a public coastal path, which we took after breakfast. As we walked, we saw several Hawaiian birds, see extra collage. The most common is the mynah bird, lower left, which is quite striking in flight as there are flashes of white on the underside of the wings. Top left is the spotted dove, top left the red-crested Cardinal, actually belonging to the Tanager family. The remaining two shots are of the Pacific Golden Plover. We spent the afternoon by the beautiful infinity pool overlooking the ocean, (see second extra), where we could see humpback whales out at sea, spouting, diving so you could see their tails, and once we even got to see one breaching. It wasn’t crowded by the pool this afternoon, as it was Super Bowl Sunday! We also enjoyed a couple of cocktails, the first one being on the house!
