Making movies with Manchán

Back in the middle lane after another scary but exhilarating adventure in the fast lane! This time in East Cork where I was meeting a film crew and Manchán Mangan - renowned folklorist, Gaeilgeoir and explorer.  If you remember some time back I was contacted by Ann who had been commissioned to do a series of programmes on Holy Wells for TG4, the Irish language programme. Well the time had come to meet up in a field in East Cork and do the business. Terrifying, but the crew were really lovely and relaxed as was Manchán, such an interesting man and very approachable and pleasant. Goodness knows what pearls of wisdom I came out with but a few Irish phrases were mangled.  The most stressful moment was actually trying to find the second well, me leading a convoy of 5 cars down tiny roads and ending up in the wrong place. By the time we got to the admittedly remote well, a hoolie was blowing, the well was covered in briars and there were cowpats everywhere - how had the cattle actually got in? I think I was looking pretty wild by the end of it too!
 They take this kind of thing in their stride for two days earlier they had been filming the Dingle Druid and her cat decided to take a sleep in the cameraman's van and ended up in Galway! Now reunited and unrepentant. The next day they filmed at another, seriously neglected well with some dodgy stuff going on around them, even with cameras obvious. And next week they're off to Achill Island where The Banshees of Inisherin was filmed. I asked if they needed a runner! 
A pretty chilled day has ensued this end.
