Dalry Cemetery
Being a beautiful day I walked to bowls and back cutting through Dalry Cemetery at dusk on the return.
Dalry Cemetery, originally called Dalry Necropolis, was opened in 1846 as a private garden cemetery. It was designed by the architect David Cousins who also designed Warriston, Dean, Rosebank and Newington cemeteries. It was described by a Victorian architectural journal as "decidedly the most tasteful necropolis in Edinburgh. The whole has a picturesque and antique aspect, well supported by catacombs of striking outline, and a gate lodge with a lofty gothic arch."
