The wind vane at the Bridgend Farmhouse commemorates the past heritage of the farm.  The wind kept changing direction which made it hard to get a clear photo but it represents the type of farming that took place until relatively recently. There were prize winning pigs, hens, cows and for a time there was a large market garden and orchard.   A video online has recent interviews with people who lived and farmed there and they mention the cows walking along the busy main road twice daily to be milked with all the traffic stopping for them.  It seems incredible now as the A7 road towards Edinburgh Royal Hospital and south to the bypass is always very busy.
Since the sixteenth century there has been a building on the site although the present farmhouse was built in the mid 18th century and extended to its present size about 200 years ago.  After the last family left in 2000 the house became derelict until it was recently restored by volunteers in the local community and now functions as a place where the community can learn new skills, exercise, grow plants, eat and generally meet together.
