Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty
A long day but fun. After Box Office we set off to Birmingham. This was me and 2 others from the CC book group ( our road), meeting a fourth in town. Unfortunately the motorway was closed due to an accident as my friend the driver had the foresight to check, so we went cross country, which took 2 hours. Nevertheless we were at the Greek restaurant in time and had a lovely pre theatre dinner.
The performance was brilliant; billed as a Gothic Romance, (with typical Matthew Bourne twists) ; set in 4 different time periods- 1890, 1911,2011 and today , with costumes to reflect. The original Tchaikovsky score with some funky links and the original Petipa choreography with modern dance interspersed. Also with the added twist of fairies becoming vampires ( I think?) :)
Hugely enjoyable whatever!
Coming home was a doddle, along the M5, but sadly another accident on the other side.
Today book group meets here to discuss the book which we had to avoid doing last night!
