standing on a runway
Nice walk through Schöneberg to the old airport at Tempelhof. Rowan wanted to check out the airlift memorial (see extra) commemorating the people that died during the mission to supply West Berlin with essentials during the time it was blocked by the Russians after the war. We walked around the grand building to enter the air field which is now a public park. Like many places in Berlin it was just left. Also in common with other places it was only left open when the locals vocally complained and protested against plans to develop the area. Berlin is a crazy place, full of history, monuments reminding people of the atrocities the Nazis perpetrated. It also reflects current events. The former airport hosts Ukrainian refugees.
Somehow I was reminded of a Hawkwind song. More pictures of today's walk on flickr.
