Paper Handkerchief Tree
I have some seed capsules of Davidia, the paper handkerchief tree collected in the summer. I refound them today and thought I must sow them! I looked up the procedure and oh my goodness they are hard to germinate!
You have to soak these capsules and when soft pull off the outer layer. Inside are some sort of nuts. These apparently have several possible little seedlings in each one, but they won’t germinate until the casing has rotted down a bit. When they start to emerge they then have to be chilled for a while until they start to grow!
After that it’s plain sailing all the way to a flowering tree in twenty years or so…..why am I bothering? It’s a challenge! I do not do things because they are easy do I?? Watch this space!
