Nearly famous!
In 1979, April 11th to be precise, (it’s written on the back of the record sleeve!) during the period I was a member of the London Symphony chorus, Andre Previn (or Mr Preview as Eric liked to call him) conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and chorus, in a recording of Britten's ‘Spring Symphony' - I believe at Kingsbury studios. Dame Janet Baker was one of the soloists, with Robert Tear and Sheila Armstrong. I remember this recording session not least because of the logistics of so many people in a live recording session - including the young boys choir (who were excellent) as well as the symphony orchestra and chorus - and Previn was my favourite conductor when singing, but I had totally forgotten about getting my vocal score autographed by him and Dame Janet. It was one of several performances Previn conducted when I was a member of the chorus, (he was still Principal Conductor of the LSO at the time) usually concerts at the Festival Hall, South Bank - but it is, I think, the only time that he conducted a recording I was singing in and it’s definitely the only time I got his autograph. I'd forgotten all about it until this evening, when bro having left, I spent an hour or two in the study, working my way through old vocal scores, orchestral scores, school musical scores, Christmas performance collections, and last but not least a mountain of piano music all of which either belonged to me or my mum, a life time ago. Once again, I am trying to cull the collection, choosing which to keep and which to part with. This, (along with the LP), is definitely a keeper!
