Backward glances
More digitisation experiments with old negatives.
This time, a colour shot of two Traveller children I was working with in Sheffield's East End, in the early 1980s. At that time I was coordinating a mobile playbus service; we visited legal and illegal Traveller sites to offer play facilities and health advice.
I can see that there was an interesting composition here, but that the negative has deteriorated. So this is a 'memory' record for me, rather than a polished image.
Two children, playing with balloons, their families' trailers in the background; they're parked up next to the muted roar of the M1 motorway in Tinsley. An 'informal' stopping place, on the site of a demolished factory. At that time, many Travellers still made a sparse living from collecting and selling scrap metal. A hard life.
