It is hard to imagine 500 men marching across the little bridge over the South Esk at Newbattle Abbey in Dalkeith. It was built in the 14th century on the approach to Newbattle Abbey and used by those travelling on one of the major routes from England to Scotland. Henry VII's daughter, Margaret, crossed it on her way accompanied by the men to marry King James IV in 1503 and stopped at the abbey to obtain a blessing from the monks before meeting James. Subsequently it has become known as the Maiden Bridge and used today by golfers, cyclists and walkers.
The extra is the abbey which is now used as an adult college offering courses and conference facilities.
