Mobile briefing
As we walked on, we passed a section of street with head-height walls on either side.
Other than the walls, it was totally unremarkable - and yet, somewhere in my mind was a thought, or memory, or feeling that I couldn't put my finger on. Some connection not quite made.
At the same time, I had that shivery sensation that's almost like revulsion; the kind that's sometimes described as 'a goose walking over your grave'... a very odd saying, when you think about it.
"Alan?" Kate was saying. "You feeling all right?"
"Mmm? Yeah fine," I lied, trying to shake off the feeling - though also wishing I could nail down that elusive thought.
"Tell me again about the mobile thing. We send video clips to YouTube, is that right?" I asked. It was more to have something to say than anything else: to be honest, this part of the plan was a lot less important to me than rescuing Jen.
I could see Kate trying to keep her patience. "No, that's not quite it," she said. "The phones are set up so it's easy to send clips to YouTube - and that's why I chose them; there's not a lot you can get wrong.
"But we'll not be sending them to YouTube. We'll be sending them to my mate Simon instead. He's a freelance journo and he'd got great contacts. As soon as he gets the clips from us, he can get them picked up by the big news agencies dead easily. What's more, our friend Mr Lewis..."
"Mr Twat."
"OK, Mr Twat. Well, he knows that I know Simon. It means he'll take it seriously when I tell him what we've done."
"And er, what exactly will we have done?"
"We need to get all the footage we can while we're in there. Anything and everything that looks weird, suspicious or secret. That covers most of that awful place. Just shoot it and upload it. Si's already got the information from your dossier and memory stick, but the video is what's going to really bring those, those... scum down.
"People might not always believe what they read. But when it comes to the things they've seen with their own eyes..."
I nodded. When she was right, she was right. Which seemed to be pretty much all the time.
