Sheol an Iolaire

The stakes, outlining the shape of the ill-fated HMY Iolaire, protrude above the waters off South Beach in Stornoway. Iolaire sank in the early hours of January 1st, 1919 off Stornoway harbour. Although only a few dozen yards offshore, the force 9 gale that was blowing at the time prevented many from gaining the safety of dry land. Two hundred and one naval perished, including the full crew complement as well as nearly 180 island naval reservists. Gus am bris an latha.
