Physics Puzzle

These droplets are from a corner of a large umbrells. They were dripping at a slow constant rate and every drop i captured was followed by a smaller drop as pictured.I suspect it is some conservation oF momentum -recoil process and am wondering if one of you HS physics students have an explanation.
The drop elongation is a vertical focal plane shutter artifact.
