Davos

Gavin was planning on skiing today but it was drizzling with low cloud this morning, so he decided against it. It soon cleared and we decided to go around the mountain to Davos, to walk around the lake. The main ski area is in the mountains between our village Klosters and Davos, and you can access it from either side of the mountain, so the towns are very close to each other. When we got to Davos the car park at the lake was blocked off and the military were setting up security entrances to the town, and we realised that they are getting ready for the World Economic Forum which take place here from 16-20 January. The main high street was closed and traffic was diverted as they were setting up more security measures there too. It is understandable when you consider the number of important world leaders who attend this conference that security needs to be very tight.

We decided to walk along the bottom path at the base of the mountains. It was busy with many ski schools, as Swiss children are still on holiday. Here is a view of Davos - we have never liked the architecture of this town, it has mainly flat roofed modern buildings instead of the more traditional chalet style buildings that we have in Klosters, but to be fair it suits the area as it is a very sunny town and most apartments have lovely big windows and enclosed balconies which must be a wonderful sun trap in winter.

Xena enjoyed playing in the snow, there seemed to be much more here than there is in Klosters. After our walk we went back and got a few things at the supermarket before going to our favourite cafe for a light lunch of home made soup.

Gavin had some work phone calls this afternoon while I edited my photos. It has been a lovely lazy week and we have enjoyed being here, despite not skiing. We chatted to one of the local retailers in the village and he confirmed that it has been so busy on the ski slopes here as the other smaller resorts around here have closed due to the poor snow conditions. Gavin is coming back here in 2 weeks time with about 25 work colleagues to ski, and we hope that the snow improves before then!
