Council Action?
So groyne number four has been twisted for over a year and it seems the council has now noticed. The current limit of their action appears to be attaching some signs to the groyne. Maybe to fend off liability claims if someone gets injured climbing on it? How long until it gets properly repaired? I may be doing them a disservice and it is all in hand and the signs are the sign that the repair will be done soon. Will it stay in its current state as long as the still empty Dalriada - a sad loss of 'public' space, now compounded by the Rockcliffe Hotel also closing down and supposedly also becoming a private residence. This is what happens when you leave the market to 'plan' the neighbourhood. Fewer and fewer community spaces leading to less and less of a sense of community. Just like the developers on the new flats and houses at the other end of Portobello who are trying again to overturn the planning condition that required them to provide some office space and use the space for residential units instead. They claim there is no interest in the space, but I suspect that is because they are expecting too much in rent. I'm sure there are lots of locals who would like to use the space, at the right price. Shouldn't that be how the market works - if there is no interest the price is too high so the answer is to bring the price down. I'd like the council to stick to their guns, but I expect money will talk and the spaces will become a few more flats.
