Painful day
Today was emotionally very painful, not just personally but more ‘globally’ following first hand experience, yet again, of our struggling NHS.
My daughter was unwell yesterday and also over night. This morning we phoned 111who sent an ambulance. The ambulance arrived fairly swiftly and took her to local hospital. I followed in car and met them there. As expected, there was a queue of stationary ambulances all unable to ‘unload/hand over’ their patients. We were told that there would be a 19 hour wait for her to be transferred from ambulance onto hospital trolley. The nurse advised that if she were able to transfer onto chair and wait in waiting room, the wait would be considerably less. Due to chronic pain and seizure threat, sitting in a chair for any length of time is not ideal. However, as her legs are a little stronger at the moment she opted for this option.
The waiting room was like something you see in a war zone. It was heaving and full of very poorly and visibly wounded people. I sat beside a woman who was vomiting (sorry for detail but I need to paint picture), I was opposite a poor woman who was struggling to breath and who looked very feverish. There was a woman who appeared to be in her 90’s in a hospital gown with facial injuries. Her gown not allowing any dignity whatsoever. I could go on. The rhetoric is often ‘people are visiting A&E who shouldn’t be’ was certainly not evident. The whole scene was disturbing on every level.
On a personal note, once we were seen and received sound advice, we could go home . This was of course a good outcome for us but left a very worrying view first hand view of the huge, multifaceted problem currently faced in the IK.
Absolutely terrifying! :( :(
