The steel frame of a building at Bushfield Camp near Winchester.

The camp was established in June 1939 on land that was originally a cornfield. It was used during WW II by the King's Royal Rifle Corps and the Officer Cadet Training Unit for American men who enlisted in the British Army for the duration of the War. After the War it was used as the Army Records Centre in the 1950s, a hostel for archaeological excavation volunteers 1964-67, a transit camp for troops returning from the Far East in 1967 and finally accommodation for 223 Signals Squadron. It was abandoned by the MoDe 1975/76 and finally closed down 1977/78.

Last year someone bricked up the doors and to the remaining brick built structures. Over the months some seem to have been reopened.

The site is a haven for wildlife but one wonders how long before the developers move in.

BT Update. Just after I posted yesterday BT called to say they have fixed the problem, it has only taken 7 weeks.
