Hindsight
As I rather grumpily said yesterday, I went for a hike and didn't see anything much. I did, however, stuff up the arthritis in my foot, and tickled up an old back injury.
So, today, with the benefit of hindsight, I settled down in my backyard, right by an overgrown clump of seaside daisies, and waited.
It didn't take long before I saw a total of 4 butterfly species, a few common-or-garden honey bees, a native bee I desperately wanted to photograph but it was too quick and too clever for me; and a few different hover flies and regular flies.
This is a common grass-blue butterfly - it's tiny, and very flittery so I was pleased it settled long enough, and the light was good enough to capture a bit of its lovely iridescence. If you are lucky enough to see it with wings open, they are a lovely soft blue. It looks even better in "large".
Happy New Year everyone. Here's to more butterflies and native bees.
