Gown of Repentence, National Museum

A  few months ago we went to a talk by Dr Flora Johnston on her book "What you call free".  Set in the 17th century it was inspired by two real life women, Jonet Gothskirk and Helen Alexander.  Jonet came to Flora's attention when she carried out museum research into the specific history of their sackcloth / gown of repentance artifact which had been donated in 1806 by the minister of West Lothian parish. In 1677, each Sunday for many months, Jonet was forced to appear in front of the church congregation wearing the sackcloth for her adultery.

I was fascinated by Flora's talk and wanted to see the 'gown' so today Deirdre and I took a walk along to the Museum.

This morning I had my first game of bowls since 4th December!
