Miracle cure.

The manufacturer's repair man came today to replace the door seal.  In discussion he mentioned the benefits of running a maintenance cycle occasionally with the maker's brand of 'cleaner' at 90degC.  This would have many advantages, including clearing some of the gunge that accumulates in the nooks and crannies of the outer drum on this machine, preventing alleged displacement of the rotating drum towards the door and alleged out-of-round distortion of the rotating drum (the last 2 of which were cited as causes for the new seal rubbing against the drum).  At first the seal rubbing against the drum was going to require a replacement drum which would cost more than a new machine, so maybe a new machine (to replace a 5 year old machine!).  Fortunately our in-house engineer was able to point out the very small tolerance between drum and seal and that maybe just a slackening off and re-seating of the new seal would solve the problem.  It did.  The in-house lawyer then read both machine and 'cleaner' instructions to see that 60degC was the preferred 'cleaning' temperature in both cases and the 'cleaner' contained no magic ingredients.  So we have established that the machine has not suffered cleaning neglect, nor displaced its drum nor distorted its drum - all that as well as fitting a replacment seal! Warning: may contain traces of irony.
