Spring Cleaning

But it isn't Spring yet, I hear you say.

True, but returning home after Christmas, the musty smell in the dining room which has been building up over many weeks triggered us into action to try and discover the cause.  There are two possibilities, both related to the bookcase which, in this picture, is lying on its back on the floor waiting to be cleaned and polished.  This normally stands up against the wall in the background, and there were signs of mould growth starting behind (a problem when furniture is placed up against an outside wall without a cavity). I lifted the carpet to make sure there were no problems beneath (there weren't, thankfully). The wall has now been cleaned.

The books inside the cabinet also smelled musty, which is more difficult to deal with. Some of them (but not all) are quite old. I shall investigate possible solutions.
