These days I like learning about history from fiction rather than any serious study. I love historical novels that recreate a historical time or place or person. This Christmas present looks like being a doozy. It’s set in Georgian Edinburgh, about which I know almost nothing. It concerns the Edinburgh Botanic Garden’s move from Leith Walk to the new larger location at Inverleith in 1822. It has the flowering of a rare exotic plant, the struggles of women to make their way in a male dominated society…
