Fragment of a Cockerel Mosaic

When the Burrell Museum reopened earlier in the year one of the items I was really hoping to see was the mosaic Cockerel. Although it was on the outside of the book about the  collection it was nowhere to be found in any of the display areas ...... until today when L and I found a new area which has recently been opened up.

There was my Cockerel with almost an entire wall to himself.
Burrell bought this fragment of a mosaic floor in 1954. It shows a flamboyant Cockerel, with golden wings and long green tail feathers. The floors of some Roman buildings were decorated with mosaics made of tiny tiles, creating pictures of everyday life, people or animals. The mosaic was made in Italy around 100BC.

It has been another wet, dull and thoroughly miserable day and the conditions underfoot in the park were too muddy ..... it's warm and dry in the Burrell, a great place for a coffee and a wander.
