Pilgrimage to Fountains Abbey.
What a beautiful morning for a drive out into the Yorkshire countryside.
After a break of two years, due to Covid restrictions, we joined the Pudsey Ramblers at Fountains Abbey for the Carol Service that follows after the Pilgrimage from Ripon Cathedral
It was on this day in 1132 that 13 monks walked from Ripon, following the river Skell, and found this beautiful valley where they built their own community, and so it was Fountains Abbey was was born..
However this year there were only 5 of us, and the other three ladies who are now all over 85 just attended the service and didn’t come on a walk afterwards.
So that meant that Mr C and I did the walk ( a shortened version) by ourselves, keeping up the PRs tradition. There are usually about 12 of us doing the walk.
Unfortunately we did have some sad news at the weekend. One of our members passed away on Christmas Eve. He has been fighting leukaemia for many years, and was admitted to hospital on Friday, but passed away Saturday morning. The club is going to seem strange without him. He was treasurer until last year, and was a committee member long before we joined.
He was one that always did today’s walk.
RIP Ian.
