Learning to Stitch

Hundreds of years ago decorative embroidery was an essential skill that girls from wealthy families had to learn. Samplers were one of the first pieces girls completed, followed by embroidered pictures and then more complex raised and padded-work panels. Finally, girls created fancy boxes, mirror frames and baskets.

The casket in the blip was decorated at the end of the 17thC. A set of pre-drawn panels were stitched by a girl aged 10 to 12. The panels were then sent to a cabinet-maker to make into the box.

We were meeting Mary for a walk in Pollok but due to rather inclement weather we had a coffee and a wander round the Burrell. If it was wet this morning this afternoon is been even wetter …. bring back the crisp, clear frosty weather which I love.
