Sol LeWitt in Hartford

This is the main lobby of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, featuring a very large wall drawing by Sol Lewitt*.

We had lunch in Hartford with my son Adrian, his partner Heather and her parents, following her graduation today with a Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut (we would have had to get up at 6 am to make the ceremony in Storrs CT, so we settled for lunch).

*Sol Lewitt (1928-2007), among much else, essentially invented a new form of art, designing wall drawings. He did not execute them himself, but laid out the designs to be executed by others. We realized today, for the first time, that he grew up in Hartford, and (according to Wiki) "his mother took him to art classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum." A very extensive series of his wall drawing is at MassMoca in western Massachusetts (a previous blip).

At the museum we saw a superb exhibition on Caravaggio and His Legacy, with several Caravaggio paintings--included this "St Francis in Ecstasy" in the museums collection, as well as two dozen works by his followers.
