Boxed Off.

I noticed this box when I was putting the paint away yesterday in the cellar of the cottage in Llanfairfechan. I have never noticed it before. I don't know what it was used for. I wondered if it was some sort of money box. This is a different view when the top is slid upwards the slot drops down and there are two small chambers. Any Ideas?
