Shell Grotto
had a nice walk in the Newhails grounds near Musselburgh.
This shell grotto is in the wooded area , some of the info reads ,
"Soyou have undertaken the arduous task of finishing the grotto and want my assistance for shells. corals and other things of the kind....."
A letter from William Dalrymple Canton 1774 .
The outer walls are of carved stone and industrial waste, embedded with
sparkling minerals , shells and fragrents of porcelain.
Inside the walls were once decorated with shells from nearby Musselburgh , and as far away as the East Indies , as documented in Christian Dalrymples diaries .
