A cold drink
I have increased the amount of food in the garden for the birds and tried to keep the water supply free of ice. The fallen apples from the trees in the school field, which are right next to our garden, are attracting flocks of birds, including Blackbirds, Starlings, Fieldfares, plus the many small birds that are regular visitors.
At one stage this morning they all suddenly left, it turned out that the Sparrow Hawk had arrived and sat in the apple tree. Two Magpies turned up and tried to dislodge the hawk; it took a while, but they succeeded. Their technique was interesting, one sat in front to distract the hawk's attention while the other attacked from behind.
I thought that was very clever.
The hawk didn't get an easy meal, it's a hard life out there .
