The jar of pickled snakes...and other treasures!
Anyone who has ever visited the John Hastie Museum in Strathaven will remember the jar of pickled snakes, lizards and arthropods which was on display near the entrance. It fascinated young children and either fascinated or repulsed adults, depending on how sqeamish they were. No-one quite knows how or why it got to Strathaven, but it has been there a long time and has become part of the town's history for several generations. Octogenarions remember it from their childhood days.
Sadly, the charming and quaint old Museum was closed last year due to austerity cuts, but some of its treasures were back on display today, including the jar of snakes. It continues to fascinate. Apparently it is not sealed and the smell of Victorian pickled snake soup is not something you ever want to experience!
The Japanese figure at the foreground of the photo is a Hotei... one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Taoism. He is always shown carrying a bag, as a symbol of his benevolence and is usually shown with an adoring child. Rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck and prosperity... Must dash now.... off to buy a lottery ticket...! :)
