There was a cold northerly wind this morning, that chilled us as we descended to Cuxsac. We first met Fabien and deposited our bags in the back of the Transit. Then we waited for and joined our cycling buddies as they swept past our road end en route to Carcassonne. We were there in no time and sipped coffees in the central square as serious tourist jostled for space to take photos. Back on our bikes, we headed west.
The wind was in our face for the rest of the day and slowed progress considerably. We had lunch in a small village beside a war memorial from our ever faithful Transit Cafe. There then followed a large hill - the first of many this afternoon - and we all strung out. Bob slowed to protect his knee and my legs got weaker as they became more tired.
It was a difficult last 10 miles and I was glad of the shelter from the wind as I trudged in behind the stronger boys. Bob followed.
My bike had developed a screech from the free hub when I stopped pedalling and it was a priority to have it looked at after we reached Mirepoix. Luckily I found a cycle shop from heaven in a village 14k away and set off with Bob and Fabien in the van. The owner knew what the problem was instantly and stripped the free hub in minutes. He replaced the defective spacer and lubricated the mech all for less than £10 and I was even able to resist buying another rear light or any of the fantastic clothing he had on special offer. Back at the hotel we met up with the boys and headed out to look at this lovely market town and take a few well earned beers.
We ate in the hotel and despite being on their cheapest menu, ate some superb food and despite most of us having two courses of fish, washed it down with red wine because that was the only type Dave Cook would drink.
