You may notice that at street level the flats look a bit unusual. That's because they were originally shops. But over the 100+ years since the tenements were built, retail has changed significantly and small stores gradually put out of business. After they closed down, lots were converted into flats. Keep your eyes peeled when going round Edinburgh and you will notice many tenements featuring this sort of conversion.
