Bicycle Boy
This is a lovely story of two brothers meeting to close down the family cycle repair shop - only to rediscover the joys of bikes and a long-forgotton cycling superhero. The electricity has already been switched off, so the audience have to help out by generating the power by peddling bikes - innovative and great fun!
The songs are catchy - I may finally remember how to spell 'bicycle' - and there are some clever touches, including the children's blank faces when Sam asks "does anyone recall what this is?" whilst holding aloft a 7" record (am I so old?).
'Bicycle Boy', playing in a disused shed at Osney Mill near Oxford station, continues the high quality and inventiveness of Oxford Playhouse 'plays out' events - I still have great memories of experiencing Hamlet in the Bodlean quod and The Story of the 4 Minute Mile at Iffley Road running track last year.
Snappy songs, chirpy children, brilliant bikes and an innovative venue - plus his mum's memorable cycle safety advice: "no hands = no teeth". I won't forget that!
