At the hustings
I haven't been to a political meeting in a very long time. But I have been a Labour Party member since 2015. We have a really wonderful local Labour MP, who I've been happy to support with minor bits of leafletting and canvassing over the years.
Anyway, he's retiring at the next election, at the ripe old age of 70. So there's been a selection process for a successor, culminating in a shortlist of four, a final hustings and a members' vote.
Against all my rather gloomy expectations the speeches were both short and interesting, and the whole event was really well-organised. A local woman of Yemeni descent - and the daughter of a Sheffield steel worker - won the vote. She's called Abtisam Mohamed, and was by far the most engaging and convincing candidate, in her speech and in her thoughtful responses to questions.
So now we just need a general election to get her - and, let's hope, many other Labour MPs- into Parliament. And into power? Fingers crossed.
