Have a seat

Do you recognise these rural seats? I guess they must have looked the same wherever you are in the world. In the forties and fifties and maybe even earlier, they were common on farming utensils, machines pulled by horse or tractor. They were sort of nice to sit on for a while, somewhat springy and bottom-shaped. After a day of sitting on them though, they were a trial. Nothing compared to our modern, gyro tractor seats where you sit more or less still whatever bumps comes in your way. In my danish family, who were mostly peasants, they were common.

I saw this one on my walk, they are quite rare nowadays. It seemed to be dumped along with another lot of obvious trash in a small grove next to a field. I'm thinking of asking permission by the land owner to detach the seat and use it. A friend of mine, who once was a blacksmith, used to make seats that he put up where he thought it would be nice to sit down for a while, bobbing up and down. Somewhere in the garden perhaps, or attached so you could use the house or the shed as a back support, with a small table for the cup of coffee.
