PEP BAND

One of the great things about American high schools is the opportunities that the students have to participate in organized Interscholastic sports. Just about every sport short of cricket can be found in some schools.

For those not particularly athletic, the music programs provide opportunity to participate in the pep band...a group of musicians who drum up excitement for the athletes on stage. And MANY of the pep band members are also athletes but play in the band in their off season. The young lady on saxophone above is an example...she's a premier volleyball player but plays in the band during the basketball season.

There are wrestlers who play in the pep band during basketball games. Their seasons run concurrently but basketball games are in the evening after wrestling practice so there's no conflict.

We have many exchange students from other countries and I have known hundreds of them in my 46 year teaching career.  There's almost unanimous agreement among them that sport as part of the curriculum is something they wish they could take home to their own schools. Typically, sport there is conducted outside of school.
