"Wrinkled deep in time" *

I've just had another birthday so when I noticed these shrivelled apples still hanging from the tree I felt a certain sympathy. Pitted, furrowed and wizened but still hanging on - yes! Maybe their shrunken flesh has concentrated their sweetness, or indeed their tartness. Maybe their wizened appearance denotes wisdom too. Have I also wisened  with age? 
Not necessarily: according to this the two words are not cognate.
