Entangled

I noticed this huge tangle of stems on the wall of Packwood House (a National Trust house in Warwickshire). Looking closer, I was amazed to see that it is a fig tree; look closely and you can see a few fruit. It must be very old, and someone has taken the trouble over the years to thread all of those stems into complex knots. It made me think of Gormenghast.
