Had a trip to the Pergamon museum today. The scale of the Ishtar gate and the detail of the market of Milet were spectacular. I am not convinced that they belong in Berlin though.
My favourite exhibit was a slightly broken ball which you could see contained a number of small counters. It was used as a delivery note, approximately 5000 years ago. The number of counters corresponded to the number of e.g. sheep. The counters were then placed inside a clay ball which was sealed. When the sheep had been delivered the ball was broken and number of counters checked to make sure no sheep were missing.
