Budleigh Salterton.
Jacqui went to Budleigh Salterton today with the RSPB so I went with her. There was a howling wind, strong enough to propel you along, and the sea was red with churning sand and red earth. I loved the bracing walk along the beach with its pebbles of all sizes. Known as Budleigh buns there is a fine of £100 for anyone removing beach material. The birders, on a guided visit to see the Lower Otter Restoration Project got a soaking later, as did I . There was a very handy phone box on the beach to alert the rescue services or inform on anyone pocketing buns. Budleigh is a quaint old seaside resort with old fashioned ladies and gents outfitters ideal for buying Wincyette pyjamas, as well as new upmarket cafes. It even has two traditional wine merchants. I spent quite a while sheltering in the library, which was very cosy, and offered readers a hot drink to keep warm. Former residents include Reg Varney, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reg_Varney who like countless others in this retirement town, has a memorial bench in his name.
