Look Down

This face looks down from the ornamental fireplace within the castle folly in Saltram House Gardens, Plymouth. Feeling cold, with occassional showers, there were few visitors today. The sunlight shining through the gothic windows was just catching the rather solemn and thoughtful-looking face. I imagine it is some time since anyone lit a fire here to make the light flicker across the facial features. In some ways the figure seems to resemble a death mask and it may embody a likeness to someone once associated with this place.
